Workplace sexual harassment seldom appears in a “sleep with me or you’re fired” scenario.  Rather, harassing coworkers and supervisors typically begin with a slow approach, testing the waters through suggestive comments, unsuitable jokes, and light touches in an attempt toward physical closeness.

Often, these comments and touches appear totally innocent at first glance, or at least accidental by many accounts, but that is by design. Employees on the receiving end of these acts often feel uncomfortable almost immediately, yet they fear that reporting the conduct would, at best, result in being labeled a workplace trouble maker or, at worst, losing their job.

Common examples of sexual harassment include unwanted physical contact such as hugs and back rubs, unusually intimate comments about one’s physical appearance, sexualized jokes or stories, and questions about a one’s body or sexual experiences.
